something like a 80s/90s Rabbit/Golf?
I haven't found any with the oil filter on that side, or with the same valve cover setup, but plenty of VW engines that are similar. Certainly the spark plug locations, engine mount design, engine orientation (timing on left, trans on right), and timing belt design seems similar to other VW engines.

Also look for engines with intake and exhaust ports on the same side. Probably a 2v per cylinder motor. I was thinking Volvo Marine for a while but, no....
